:: Ophthalmology is the star of the 1st stage of 2008 Sertões Rally Social Actions

The 1st stage of the 2008 School Sustainable Development Program (PDSE) and the Sertões Rally Social Action, developed by the Instituto Brasil Solidário (IBS), started on April 7th, at the Padre Zezinho School. The activities will involve three visits to the municipalities involved during the year, starting off in April.

The first visit involves a team of 10 professionals who will aim to implement the continuity and development programs that focus on the education, health, environmental protection and social inclusion areas. The people and equipment are transported in an IBS Van and a Casas Bahia (household goods store) truck.

The latest thing in the health program, for example, will be the use of Opto Eletrônica's Magis Ophthalmology Device, which is being used to train the teachers that will perform the visual acuity tests on the students and community. On the second visit, the people that are to be treated can choose their spectacle frames, all provided by the company Tecnol. Besides this, the program develops dental and ophthalmology projects, and carries out blood glucose, cholesterol and blood pressure tests.

In the education area, a full library is put together for each school/municipality, with a collection donated by the DCL, Melhoramentos, Reader's Digest and Educar Dpaschoal publishing houses, thus making the dreams of the school directors, coordinators, students and community come true. The teachers take part in the training and organization courses, in cataloging, assembling and displaying the collection on the shelves used in the program, setting up the reading corner, and in using the collection in the classroom. This enriches and greatly improves the quality of daily school life.

"It was a very good start. The School has mobilized a number of local partners for activities such as storytelling, lectures, community services and recreational actions. Just like 2007, we are certain that we will do an excellent job in the state of Goiás, and with the Parque Ateneu community", said Luis Salvatore, of IBS.

The Sustainable Development Program and the Social Action are carried out in partnership with the Sertões International Rally, Palmeirinha Rally, the Itaú Social Foundation, Opto Eletrônica and the Tecnol Group.
