The Opto Rally Team finishes the longest day of the Rally in 17th position

The 6th stage held yesterday from Palmas (TO) to Balsas (MA) broke yet another record for this edition of the Sertões Rally: the longest special ever was part of this stage (536 km).

There was an initial drive of 126 kilometers to the place where the special section began. It started off very quickly with some very fast stretches, where there were few curves and some fairly high mountains to drive over.
In Lizarda (TO), where the motorcycles and cars were refilled for the first time in a long special, a very slow section began with a lot of sand until the rally arrived at the southern plateaus, in Maranhão, a high-speed farming area, but with a lot of navigation.
There were a lot of sudden changes in direction. There were a lot of stretches where the teams had to leave the road to enter another farm. This placed great demands on the navigation.
The race ended near Balsas (MA), with a final 20-kilometer drive along an asphalt road. It was the longest day of the rally covering 682 kilometers.
The Opto Rally Team finished this stage in 17th position!! Good luck, team!!

The team finished the 5th stage in 18th place according to the corrected official results issued by the Rally organizers.

The ophthalmology actions continue... On June 20 (Friday) 94 people were given ophthalmology examinations in Paranã (TO), of which 48 will be given glasses.
On Saturday, examinations were carried out in Palmas (TO) where 97 people were looked at and 53 pairs of glasses were prescribed. On Sunday, the team moved on to Balsas (MA) where examinations were carried out yesterday. 87 people were seen and 46 pairs of glasses were donated.

In the opinion of Dr. Vagner Orlando Filho, the project ophthalmologist, a cornea specialist, and a 3rd year student of plastic eye surgery, "it is very gratifying to take part in a project of this type. A problem that is, for us, apparently simple to sort out, such as prescribing a pair of glasses is, for the people who are benefited by the project, a huge benefit. They become able to study and to live their lives better. If the problem cannot be solved by simply prescribing a pair of glasses, that is: if diseases are found, we at least have the chance of explaining to these people what they have and sending them to hospitals where the pathology detected can be treated and monitored".

In Balsas, one case of toxocariasis, an infectious eye disease where a parasite forms a membrane in the region of the eye, becoming opaque and interfering with vision, was found. This type of blindness cannot be treated because it affects the retina (fundus).
The disease is transmitted by a parasite found in dog feces, and can be transmitted due to poor hygiene at home. The disease rarely affects both eyes of the same person; it is much more common for just one eye to be affected.

Today the examinations were given at the Manuel Carvalho de Almeida Municipal School in Nova Iorque (MA).

The Opto Rally Team is sponsored by the companies Mediphacos, Ophthalmos, Opto Global and Tecnol, which are also supporting the Social Action in Ophthalmology.

See you tomorrow!
